Americanism essay winners announced – The Enterprise – 4/29/2016


The Southern Maryland American Legion Auxiliary Unit 221 in Avenue on April 8 hosted its annual Americanism Essay Awards Reception. This year the topic was: How do we keep Lincoln’s promise to our veterans and their families? Students in grades three to eight participated with 143 essays submitted.


The winners were presented with engraved plaques, a U.S. Flag and a sun visor. The first place winners also receive a bronze medal and their essays were forwarded to the Southern Maryland District American Legion Auxiliary for further competition


The 2016 winners for third/fourth grade were all from Mother Catherine Academy — first place, Aaron Lemoi; second place Dylan Colliflower; and third place, Randy Payne. Fifth/sixth grade winners were: first place, Olivia Berkut, Margaret Brent Middle School; second place, Aaron Gaffud, Mother Catherine Academy; and third place, Austin Russell, Mother Catherine Academy. Seventh/eighth grade winners were: first place, Reagan Sutton, Mother Catherine Academy; second place, Caroline Daley, Father Andrew White School; and third place Brady Kinslow, Father Andrew White School.


“The auxiliary would like to extend a special thank you to the teachers, principals, and families for their continued support of this great program — God Bless America,” Linda Cross, the event chairperson, said in a release.
