Our small class sizes are typically 30 percent smaller than the average class in a St. Mary's County school. Our unique education program offers children all core subjects such as math, science, social studies, religion, language arts, and literature. All core subjects are taught to the highest standards so our students enter high school with a strong academic advantage.
Weekly Mass
Students and staff of Mother Catherine Academy prepare the liturgy for weekly mass, which is held in the school auditorium at 9 AM on Tuesday mornings. Priests from our supporting local parishes graciously take turns visiting the school to celebrate mass. The students are also given the opportunity to visit the chapel during the day in the east side of the building. The chapel provides a quiet, special place for students to spend time in prayer.
S.T.R.E.A.M.
All students, beginning with pre-schoolers, get hands-on computer experience in MCA's state of the art technology center. Weekly coursework teaches the children how to sue the software tools needed to succeed in high school and beyond. This early exposure to technology evolves to include engineering and practical building experience. The science and technology programs are combined with religion, engineering, and art to create a unique Catholic school education experience.
Drama & Music
The school presents two drama and music productions a year. The Christmas Pageant - which celebrates the reason for the holiday, the birth of Jesus Christ; and the Spring Musical. During the year the students partake in music classes, and can choose to also participate in chorus, strings and band. All of the talents produced from these classes are included in both productions the school puts on. With the addition of our strings, band, and chorus program, these groups will also perform a concert in the Spring.
Athletics
A rigorous physical education program starts children on the path to a healthy life. Students participate in PE at least once per week and are also offered opportunities to participate in extra-curricular athletics programs.
Basketball - Mother Catherine Academy is part of the Southern Maryland Youth Basketball League. Students in grades 5 through 8 can participate in JV and Varsity programs for boys or girls. We are very proud of our student athletes and encourage participation in athletics to help in the formation of a well-rounded child in both body and mind.
Cheerleading - Children in grades 1 through 8 may also participate in the cheerleading program. This program is also a part of the Sunday Youth Basketball League.
Catholic Service
At MCA, we find many ways to dedicate our time and talents to serve the community. We strive to model Jesus' example of service to others. Some ways in which we strive to live in his example are:
- Collecting food donations for the local food pantry
- Collecting coins during Lent to donate to a charity of the students choice
- Care packages for the military
- Collecting coats for the WARM Project
Agriculture Lab
Students experience first-hand God's gift of life through the schools unique agriculture lab. When possible, teachers incorporate lab projects in their classes. Thus insuring students receive a well-rounded, hands-on educational experience rooted in the real lifestyle and traditions of Southern Maryland. Produce from the lab is donated to area organizations committed to feeding the hungry in our community.
